Trevor Rustin is a South African KyokushinRyu karate instructor, 5th dan Shihan, and Branch Chief for International Karate Alliance KyokushinRyu in South Africa. He is the founder and head instructor of Trevor's Kyokushin School of Karate in Westridge, Mitchells Plain, Cape Town.
Karate career
[edit]Rustin has dedicated his life to teaching and promoting Kyokushin karate within the Mitchells Plain community of Cape Town, a historically underserved area of South Africa. His dojo, based at Stephen Reagan Hall on Park Avenue in Westridge, has produced numerous dedicated practitioners over the years and is regarded as a positive force in the local community.
5th dan grading
[edit]In 2023, Rustin traveled to Mauritius to sit for his 5th dan black belt grading. The examination was conducted by Phillip Moustache, IKAK's Africa Continental Director. The grading lasted four and a half hours and included 42 full-contact fights. Rustin passed with distinction, earning recognition across the KyokushinRyu community in Africa.
Community impact
[edit]Rustin is known among his students and peers for the positive personal impact his teaching has had on young people in Mitchells Plain. Former students and parents have spoken to his influence in developing discipline, confidence, and character in his students beyond the dojo floor.
